Rotary District Governor Jay Saltzman, and his wife Ferne, graced our Club with a visit earlier this month. He spoke to us at length about the history of Rotary.
Rotary's first community project was in Chicago in 1907, two years after the organization was founded by Paul Harris and three other men. A preacher's horse had died, making it impossible for him to do his work in the city. Rotary bought him another horse and a tradition of community service was born.
In 1908 a second club was formed in San Francisco, and in 2009 Los Angeles started its club, the fifth one in the country. This club, 'L.A . 5', continues to be a leader in the Rotary community.
